Definition:

A Scanner or digitizes is an input device that can moved over a drawing or photograph/ text to convert it into digital data. It is developed by Russell kirsch in 1957.
  • It directly can enter data into the computer without pressing any key.



Types of Scanner:
1. OCR scanner(Optical Character Recognition/Reader)
  • Read and detect any printed/ written character.
  • Direct entry input device.


2. OMR(Optical Mark Recognition/Reader)
  • Used in check the answer sheet (Multiple Choice question) or lottery Sheet.
  • It detects the letter mark by pencil or pen.
  • It mostly used in Exam to produce result.


3. MICR(Magnetic Ink Character Read/REcognition)
  • Read the character that have been printed in magnetic ink (used iron oxides)
  • Used in Bank.
  • Read the cheque holder name and account number.


4. BCR (Bar Code Reader)
  • Read the bar code and convert the electrical pulses and send to computer.
  • Used is mass market
